Module 6 Reflections

This module has helped me think about self-directed learners
and the role of differentiation in the following ways…

  1. I am always blown away by the various skill levels in my class. I always have a handful of students that really struggle and a handful of those that are high-flyers, and the rest somewhere in between. I think that differentiation and formative assessments together really help to bring all students along so that none slip through the cracks.

One thing I really like about project based learning is that is can be easily adapted to fit all learning levels and styles.

  2. This module has helped me think about self-directed learners and made me rethink how I want to evaluate students when they are working in groups. The overall goal is to have students be self learners and self evaluate. I need to have students do more self evaluation and this might allow them differentiate their own learning.

  3. This unit has helped me to look at how creating the right support docs, scaffolding, can help all students be self-directed at some level.

  4. It reminds me of how I best respond as a learner -- my learning varies with my familiarity with the content and the type of content I'm learning. Therefore, as a teacher, I must remember not to pigeon hole students by thinking that they always have the same preferences for learning in every subject I teach them.

  5. This module made me realize how important it is to provide different levels of support of individual students and to make sure that support is provided throughout the project. I also learned that providing students with plenty of feedback and opportunities for self-assessment of their work along the way is very important to their success.

  6. The most important thing this module has done for me has been becoming more adept at utilizing formative assessments during a project to help students become more self-directed learners. Giving students an opportunity to communicate with peers as well as teachers will be very helpful in my classroom.

  7. Taking time to reflect on different learning styles was a review, but purposeful because I was so focused on all this new learning some of the 'old' stuff got in the way. I've now added more choice for my students to differentiate for their learning style. I will also be considering the website that helps them learn about their learning style.

This module was a gentle reminder that not all of our widgets are identical. In order to deliver quality instruction, it's imperative to understand your audience. This includes incoming skill level, learning style, any learning disabilities or gifted traits. In addition to how the material is taught, it is also important to assess our students in a variety of ways. Scott Coles

  10. Creating forms, templates or protocols for struggling learners would be a good use of time. I could use them with students who were absent too. As I was building the unit and had tangential ideas in the content area, I listed them on my planning document. Later, I used these color coded ideas in the TAG section of my unit plan. A note in time save nine (minutes?) ......I liked learning about all the resources to address differentiation. Using the Checklist on the project assessment site added value or intention to my desire to have self-directed students.

  11. Keeping students in the loop by their own efforts, that is by self monitoring can only be a win-win. Time saved for the teacher & improved learning/effectiveness for the student.
